Every once in a while, I put out an invitation to the group to attend The Speakeasy, the jazz & spoken word series I host on Wednesday nights at Dazzle Jazz Club. April is National Poetry Month, so it seems like a good excuse to invite you guys again!

The Speakeasy is an open mike for poets, rappers, and anyone else with something to interesting say. A three-piece jazz band improvises music to go with each poet's words. The musicians are super-talented, and it's always a lot of fun. The cover is only $5.

This Wednesday, I'll be performing a brand-new jazz poem of my own, along with some old favorites. I'll also be reading selections by the Dead Poet of the Week, William Shakespeare. (April is his birth month.)

Dazzle has a swingin' cocktail menu and great food if you want a late-night snack. The Wednesday night special is a burger and fries (their burgers are awesome) and all-you-can-drink beer. The beer for the special is usually Fat Tire or some other respectable brew, not Bud Light.

(I think that I shall never hear
A poem lovely as a beer.)

Come enjoy the fun, and bring a poem of your own if you're so inclined.

Hope to see you there!

Dan

Calling all college basketball fans!

As March Madness gives way to April showers (and May flowers?), it's time for the Final Four and the national championship! Rather than scheduling a meetup for the championship game, I decided on the Final Four since (a) it's on the weekend, and (b) we get to watch two games, not just one.

Michigan State vs. Connecticut starts at 4 p.m., and that game will be directly followed by Villanova vs. North Carolina.

Hope to see you there! It should be a nice chance to socialize in a festive setting.

For Thursday's dinner rendezvous, let's meet at "Crepes N' Crepes," a French restaurant that serves... you guessed it... crepes! (The name of the place is pure genius. You have to imagine a couple of French people brainstorming English names.)

I've only been to Crepes N' Crepes once, but I was charmed by the owner and the severs, and the crepes were delicious. Savory crepes for dinner, sweet crepes for dessert -- it was meant to be.

Here's a snippet from last year's Westword review of the restaurant:

"Crepes 'n Crepes has been open for two years and has been busy since day one, hour one, minute one. There are other creperies in Denver now, as well as restaurants that do crepes as part of a larger French gestalt. But none have ever done this kind of business, and none have deserved to. That's because Crepes 'n Crepes is uncompromisingly, unabashedly and unstintingly French. The cooks are French. Owners Kathy Knight and Alain Veratti have imported all their iron crepe griddles from France. The ingredients and preparations — the camembert and Chambord, ratatouille and sauce aux champignons — are French. And the space itself — the ramshackle, patched, plastered and sunny dining rooms, cramped back bar, sundry collection of plates and flatware — gives off the honest and earned vibe of café-along-the-Seine frugality and disorder."

One of our members suggested this restaurant. It looks like a winner to me! Good location, nice decor, and a menu of yummy-sounding, reasonably priced Asian dishes. I look forward to seeing you there!

Hey, friends! Who doesn't love a wine tasting? Especially a free one.

This tasting will last about an hour and will include, in addition to the wine, the usual cheese & cracker suspects. Chances are good that the winemaker himself will be on hand to guide us through the tasting, which should be pretty cool. Afterwards, those who are interested can go to lunch.

Here's a little info on the winery from their website:

"Balistreri Vineyards is a family owned and operated winery dedicated to making high quality wine. The winery was licensed in 1998 and we released our first vintage in February of 2000. We are a small winery producing 4500 cases per year. Our wines are primarily made with vinifera varietal grapes purchased from growers in the Grand Valley Viticultural Area located in Western Colorado. Select wines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Muscat are produced with grapes from our own Denver Vineyard. We also source some varieties not available in Colorado from the Central Valley of California.

"Our winemaker John Balistreri has been making wine for more than three decades for family and friends. His wines are made completely natural, with a very approachable easy drinking style. He combines both traditional wine-making methods and modern technology to produce award winning wines. His wines are hand-crafted, one barrel at a time, with grapes that are fermented on their own yeast, unaltered by sulfites, unfiltered, and aged in American oak."

This activity should be great for single people (like myself) who are looking for something cool to do on Valentine's Day AND for couples looking for a unique date to go on after their overpriced dinner. :-)

Three cool bands are playing at the Hi-Dive, starting with Bela Karoli.

I recently met Julie Davis, the lead singer for Bela Karoli, and was instantly captivated by her music. She plays funky-sinister bass lines on her upright bass and spins a web of hypnotic jazz-influenced vocals over the top of it. It's a unique style that's very catchy and quite different from most of what you hear on the radio. I heard her perform alone, accompanied by Bjork-style electronic music she had recorded, but I hear she's even more amazing with the full band. (The other members play instruments such as accordion, violin, cello, and piano.)

The other two acts on the bill are the Ian Cooke Band and the Swedish artist Ellin Palmer. For more details, see http://www.hi-dive.com/show/detail/18656.

Tickets are $6 and can be purchased on the Hi-Dive website or at the door (assuming the show doesn't sell out).

Should be fun! Hope to see you there.

Hi, everyone!

The Colorado Symphony Orchestra has a nice program coming up this weekend. I thought it might be fun to get dressed up and enjoy some classical music together. Here's what's on the program:

1. Beethoven Symphony No. 8. This is Beethoven's shortest and most light-hearted symphony. It's fun to listen to and, while not as serious as some of his other symphonies, is considered a masterpiece.

2. "Azul" -- Cello Concerto by Osvaldo Golijov. From what I've read about this piece, it combines a traditional orchestra with futuristic electonic sounds and folk instruments. Audiences in Boston and New York went crazy for it. The young cello soloist, Alisa Weilerstein, is supposed to be really good.

3. "Pasion incesante" -- a collection of orchestral tangos by Boulder-based composer Jorge Luis Gonzalez. Got to support your local composers!

I thought it would be best for us to get the cheapest available tickets -- they're $16 (which includes a $1 fee). If you want to come, please pay me for your ticket by noon on Wednesday. You can pay through the Meetup site. If you have problems paying or any questions, feel free to get in touch with me via phone or e-mail.

Calling all sports fans! And all people who want to socialize with sports fans!

The college football season comes to its climax this Thursday when the Oklahoma Sooners take on the Florida Gators for the national championship. I'm an OU alum, so you know how excited I am about this game!!! If any of you are Florida fans, I promise I won't scream at you -- I'll only scream at the television, and only when something good or bad happens. :-)

So, come out and enjoy the game with us! Or, if you don't care much about football, come socialize and enjoy the good food at Lodo's. This is our first event of the new year, and I'd like to start things out right!

Hope to see you there!
